As Parent Mentor for Middletown City Schools, I serve as a support person for families of children with special needs. I am also a parent of a child with special needs so I understand the joys and challenges we face. I am one of the few people in the school district that can remain with you and your child from the time he or she enters preschool until they graduate high school.

I am always available to help by attending meetings with you, sharing information about parenting and educating a child with special needs, problem solving with the school district when conflicts arise, or locating community resources when needed. This web page provides only a small number of the free resources that are available to you. A comprehensive library and other booklets and information are available in the Parent Mentor office. New Annotated Guide for IEP's was updated in Oct. 2011
Adults with Disabilities Supports and Services includes information on seven specific areas relating to transition for students ready to graduate. The supports and services include cash benefits and household support, employment and career development, transportation, medical and mental health, education and further training, housing and emergency services.
Middletown Schools is looking for individuals who would like to serve as a surrogate parent to represent a child with a disability in all matters relating to qualifying for or receiving special education and related services. A surrogate parent is needed when a child's parent can not be located or identified, the child is a ward of the state, or the child is an unaccompanied homeless youth. Surrogate parents would need to attend a training (face to face) or take an online training course and be approved by the superintendent.
